The Constitution of the Republic of North Macedonia foresees freedom of expression, freedom of speech, public address, the right to public information, and the establishment of institutions for public information, while censorship is explicitly banned.

The primary financial support for commercial media in the country comes from advertising earnings, encompassing funds from the state budget as well.

Spending on media advertising by the government has increased significantly in recent years, making it one of the top five advertisers and impacting the editorial independence of the media.

North Macedonia suffers from serious issues concerning the infringement of fundamental standards for impartial, accurate, and balanced reporting.
