Freedom of the press in Hungary Fact Sheet

HUNGARY

This fact sheet provides a brief overview of the current state of press freedom in Hungary.

This document includes examples of press freedom violations and other threats that journalists face in their pursuit of the truth.

Since 2010, media pluralism and independence in Hungary have been increasingly undermined. Although avoiding the physical violence or the jailing of journalists, the Hungarian government has pursued a clear strategy to silence critical press in the country through deliberate manipulation of the media market or through the delegitimisation of journalists.

The media landscape in the country remains highly controlled by the government, and media are rather state-owned than public.

The Hungarian government has seized de facto control of 80% of the country‚Äôs media through “political and economic” manoeuvres.

Public broadcasting has turned into a propaganda forum, and independent media are subject to political, economic, and regulatory oppression, while private media outlets are taken over or completely censored.
